History of Brightwater

In 1891, a young man by the name of Thomas Nightingale purchased the site and opened what would ultimately become the Port Credit Brick Yard. At its height, the yard produced 140,000 bricks per day, bricks that were used in the construction of Port Credit, and sent to Toronto and beyond. Today, you can still spot bricks marked with a “T.N.” – Thomas Nightingale’s legacy stamped into the Canadian landscape.

The parcel of land passed through many owners throughout the twentieth century, leading to its purchase by Imperial Oil in 1989. In 2016, the Port Credit West Village Partners – a visionary team that combines the expertise of four of the country’s leading developers – purchased the land where Brightwater sits and began imagining the future of a truly complete waterfront community.

Extensive remediation regenerated the land, laying the foundation for a healthy community. Strong community engagement helped to shape and refine plans, until there was a clear vision for a future-facing, master-planned community; a new neighbourhood that would honour the rich heritage of this place while paving the way for an inspiring and innovative future.
